Wingfoiling in Caldonazzo Lake: Rare and Unique

You are currently viewing Wingfoiling in Caldonazzo Lake: Rare and Unique

Autumn has arrived, and with it comes the anticipation of rare windy days on our home lake, Caldonazzo. Last weekend, we had an incredible wingfoiling time there!

We’re fortunate to live just 45 minutes from Garda Lake, where wind, especially the morning Peler, is quite consistent. However, we always eagerly await the strong northern winds that grace our home lake. Arriving at the beach within five minutes, parking directly there, and enjoying a family-friendly atmosphere while wingfoiling and windsurfing in Caldonazzo is a unique experience. The lake’s smaller size and the dedicated community of wind enthusiasts create a welcoming and intimate environment on these rare windy days.

Wind in Caldonazzo Lake

The wind in Caldonazzo is characterized by its rarity, gustiness, and flat water conditions. Strong northern winds occur on a limited number of days during autumn and spring, often when it’s cold outside. Gusts can reach up to 30 knots, making it challenging for beginners. However, on calmer days, the wind is typically mild and breezy. The lake’s flat water, even in strong winds, is ideal for freestyle, while the steep water levels make it perfect for foilers. The backdrop is unobstructed by rocks.

Wingfoiling Spots in Caldonazzo Lake

  1. Our favorite spot is Ausburgerhof Beach/Beach Bar Moyra 3.0 in San Cristoforo. You can park directly at the beach, though parking spaces are limited. Alternatively, you can unload your gear and park a short distance away. At this paid parking lot, there’s also a beach where you can launch. This spot is convenient for launching and returning, with gusts noticeable from the start. Despite the popularity on windy days, there’s ample space for everyone to set up their gear. It’s also ideal for families, with a playground, a beach bar (open in summer), and plenty of space for children to play. The beach is sheltered from the wind, making it comfortable even on strong wind days.

  1. Ca’Rossa (San Cristoforo direction Levico) is preferred by windsurfers due to stronger winds from the beach. However, it has limited parking, space, and access via a catwalk. It’s not recommended for families due to these limitations.
  2. Alle Barche (Calceranica) offers a gentler wind, making it suitable for beginners. It has ample parking, amenities, and is family-friendly.

Family Wingfoiling

Wondering how we enjoy water sports with our little one? Since we have only one piece of equipment to share, it’s quite simple: we take turns, while the other parent plays with our child. We introduced our child to the wind from a very young age, visiting Garda Lake and spending enjoyable family windsurfing holidays in beautiful locations. We’ve never felt that our child was bothered by the strong wind, as we always ensure to keep him entertained. We believe that every sport is worth sharing with the family, and with a little organization, any activity can become an adventure and a way to discover new places and enjoy nature.

Check out the local weather forecast for northern wind and if you are in Trentino don’t miss the rare opportunity to experience the Caldonazzo Wingfoiling- and Windsurfing and meet our family of wind enthusiasts!
