Family Windsurfing Adventure in Sicily’s Hidden Gem: Puzziteddu

Our Sicilian family adventure combined hiking in the north at San Vito Lo Capo with windsurfing in the south at Puzziteddu. Arriving in Mazara, the contrast with the north was striking. Here, the vibe was less touristy and more reminiscent of North Africa, which we much preferred.

Puzziteddu is the training ground of wingfoil world champion Francesco Cappuzzo. You might even spot him training or meet his family who manages the spot. They offer on-site accommodation (looked beautiful but pricey!), so we opted for a more budget-friendly apartment 10 minutes away by car.

Wind conditions in Puzziteddu

Spring isn’t ideal for strong winds, but we were lucky to have one strong day and another with lighter winds. Dad still had a blast! Winter offers the best conditions with moderate winds (25 knots) and 1-3 meter waves, perfect for experienced wave riders. Summer, with flat water and variable winds (light to strong thermals), is ideal for beginners.

This beach is like a playground with different areas for various skill levels! Here’s the breakdown:

  • Right side: Perfect for wing foiling! The waves here are medium-sized and the water is deeper than other parts, making it easier to ride.
  • Center: This area gets tricky! Lots of rocks stick out of the water, especially when the tide is low. You can still wing foil here, but be warned – you’ll need some serious skills to avoid those rocks! This is also where you’ll find the best waves on the whole beach!
  • Left side: Unfortunately, this area is off-limits. Rocks stick out from the beach for a long way underwater, making it unsafe.

Family Friendly Fun in Puzziteddu

This long, sandy beach offers plenty of space for little ones to explore. Our little one mastered crawling here, determined to reach the sea! Be sure to bring shade, as there are no trees. The rental service is well-equipped, including gear for kids and beginners.

A baby on the Puzziteddu beach

We were captivated by the stunning turquoise and blue waters – a hidden gem! The beach is natural, with no umbrellas or tourist amenities. Don’t expect playgrounds here. Our “family-friendly” refers to our love for exploring hidden nature, where our child can roam freely.

Tribe Mommy

Embracing sports together is our tribe's motto. As avid outdoor enthusiasts, Tribe Daddy and I have imparted our passion to our baby since his earliest days. Our favorite sports include MTB, hiking, and wing foiling.
