If you’re seeking a relatively authentic and undiscovered valley in Trentino to explore with your kids, a trip to Valle dei Mocheni is a must. As locals living in Pergine, this valley represents our classic weekend getaway, and we want to share our favorite family hiking trip there: the Kaiserbisn-Vanspitz ring hike. This hike is perfect year-round, transforming into a cross-country ski and sledding path during the winter months.
Parking
You can start your hike at either Malga Kaiserbisn or Malga Vanspitz (Frassilongo), both of which offer free parking. Kaiserbisn has more ample parking, so it might be a better choice on crowded days.
Hiking Options
- Full Ring Hike: This takes about 3 hours, involves a 500-meter ascent, and covers 11 kilometers.
- Out-and-Back: You can also choose to hike to either Kaiserbisn or Vanspitz and return the same way.
We parked at Kaiserbisn and started with a longer uphill route to Vanspitz for lunch. This hike is a great option in November due to its sunny exposure and the fact that Malga Vanspitz and Malga Kaiserbisn are among the few mountain huts open on weekends in Trentino during this time.
Malga Vanspitz
This mountain hut features a fantastic garden with wooden toys, a swing, and a large field for kids to play. There’s even a designated area for relaxation and a Kneipp water path. The hut is adorned with wooden sculptures, and the views of the valley and surrounding mountains are simply breathtaking. The staff is friendly, and the food is delicious, making it the perfect spot for lunch or a post-hike break.
Malga Kaiserbisn Hitt
We are big fans of their cakes (especially the ones with nuts and coffee). The atmosphere is familiar and inviting, and the building is surrounded by a large green field where your little one is free to explore and enjoy, decorated with some wooden structures.
