WINDSURFING and WINGFOILING IN TRENTINO

Trentino windsurfing/wingfoiling is synonymous with Lake Garda, undoubtedly the premier spot due to its consistent winds and numerous locations.

This blog section aims to provide local suggestions and tips on lesser-known spots, such as Lake Cavedine and Lake Caldonazzo. The choice of location depends on the wind forecast, wind consistency, and your level of expertise. Generally, Lake Garda offers spots and conditions for all levels; refer to our dedicated post to determine the most suitable location for you.

Lake Cavedine experiences the same winds as Lake Garda, but with reduced intensity and consistently flat conditions. This, combined with its smaller size and easy access, makes it an excellent choice for beginners or for days when Lake Garda is too crowded.

Lake Caldonazzo, unless you are just beginning and want to learn how to stand, rarely has wind, except on rare occasions when the northern wind is exceptionally strong—perhaps only 15 days per year.

Understanding the Winds in Lake Garda and in Trentino

The winds at Lake Garda and Lake Cavedine are thermal winds, specifically:

  • Peler: This wind typically blows in the early morning, strongest in the mid-Garda (Malcesine) area. It is generally stronger in terms of knots and waves compared to the Ora. It is best suited for experienced windsurfers, unless you opt for the northern part of the lake during Peler hours, where the water is usually flat and the wind is less intense.
  • Ora: The Ora is rarely as strong as the Peler but is more accessible as it blows during midday and early afternoon. Spots to enjoy this wind are located in the northern part of the lake, particularly Torbole.

Unlike Lake Garda, Lake Caldonazzo experiences the northern föhn, a non-thermal wind. In the rare event of a strong föhn, the Peler wind at Lake Garda will be absent.

Detailed information on specific spots and their respective wind conditions can be found in the dedicated posts below.

Where We Check Wind Forecasts for Lake Garda

Among the wind spots, Garda is undoubtedly the most consistent. We use the following tools to check wind forecasts, but remember that these are thermal winds, which are difficult to predict, and forecasts, especially long-range ones, are rarely reliable.

  • Gardasee-wind: In the forecast section, a downward pressure curve indicates potential Peler wind, while an upward curve suggests potential Ora wind.
  • Meteo-Swiss App: In the animation section you can zoom and see forecasts for winds in Lake Garda.
  • Meteotrentino: This website provides local weather forecasts. Specifically, wind forecasts for Lake Garda are generated using a mathematical model. The website also includes a dedicated section for checking potential northern wind days at Lake Caldonazzo.
  • wwwind webcam: We use this website to view webcams, which are invaluable for assessing current conditions. A strong wind indicator is when the Malcesine webcam shows speeds exceeding 10 knots.
